England isn’t all about London! Come and discover more of England on our tour of Rye, where you will walk on cobbled streets, learn about the smugglers trade which was rife in Rye, and ghost stories. We will take you too Mermaid Street to walk on the cobbled streets, passing the Mermaid Inn, before taking in some beautiful views of Rye from above at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, and finally Ypres Tower, which has been used for many purposes over the years.
About the tour:
This is a walking and sightseeing tour of Rye in East Sussex, covering the top sights of Mermaid Street, Mermaid Inn, Church of St Mary the Virgin, and Ypres Tower. This is a walking tour starting from Rye train station, stopping at the above sights covering about a 1-mile distance, taken at your own pace.
Cost is £10 per person, any admission to the sights, and meals are not included. We have included information on the admission prices for the sights below. We cater for small groups or individuals, and suitable for all age ranges.

We will meet at Rye train station before walking to Mermaid Street. We will continue to walk up the cobbled street of Mermaid Street, whilst checking out the interesting house names along the way. This will take us past The Mermaid Inn, whereby you can hear more about the Hawkhurst Gang who were smugglers known to frequent the inn. It is also said that The Mermaid Inn is haunted, many guests have been said to see ghosts in their rooms.
At the end of Mermaid Street, we will walk to the Church of St Mary the Virgin, here you will get the opportunity to climb to the top of the church for 360-degree views of Rye, before taking a short walk to Ypres Tower.

We will stop at Fletchers House or Simon the Pieman for lunch and Tea and cake.

Rye Railway Station
The main station which operates trains between Eastbourne via Hastings to Rye, and Ashford International.
Mermaid Street is definitely unique, with the unusual house names on either side of the road. Can you spot the names on the way?
The period black and white Tudor exterior is prominent throughout the building. Stories of the haunted inn, smugglers gangs are only part of the history of Rye.
Church of St Mary the Virgin
Cost: £4.00 per person
Narrow corridor, steeps steps, the bell tower, all of this is worth seeing and more, once you have reached the top of the church with stunning 360-degree views of Rye.

This is one interesting tower, it's been used as a defence against French invasion, a private house, prison, and a museum. Each floor and room have different exhibits, which follows the history of Rye and Ypres Tower.
